Stickers
As part
of YouthRules!, the Wage
and Hour Division is making available special
stickers which employers may place on hazardous
equipment to alert all workers that no one under
18 years of age may operate the equipment. The
stickers are available from your local Wage and
Hour Division Office or may be printed directly
from this website.
The use of these
stickers is strictly voluntary, but the Department
of Labor and our YouthRules! partners encourage
their use. We believe that the stickers can play
an important role in promoting positive and safe
work experiences for young workers.
The
stickers are appropriate for use on many different
types of equipment that minors under 18 years of
age are prohibited from operating by the youth
employment rules. Such equipment include:
- power-driven meat slicers and meat grinders;
- forklifts;
- paper balers and cardboard compactors;
- power-driven bakery equipment, including
mixers;
- power-driven woodworking equipment,
including chain saws and circular saws,
- freight elevators; and
- other machines specifically prohibited by
the youth employment hazardous
occupations orders.

There are three different stickers. The two
"generic" STOP stickers
may be used on any type of equipment or
machinery. One of these stickers warns employees
that they must be "18 TO OPERATE OR CLEAN THIS
EQUIPMENT." |
 |
|
The other STOP
sticker states "NO OPERATORS UNDER 18 YEARS OF
AGE." Both of these generic stickers picture a
traffic "STOP"
sign. |

 |
|
A third sticker has been designed
specifically for use on forklifts. In response
to the high incidence of occupational injuries
to young employees involving forklifts, the
Massachusetts Department of Public Health and
the Wage and Hour Division have developed this
sticker. It pictures a forklift and alerts
employees that "NO OPERATORS UNDER 18 YEARS OF
AGE. IT’S THE LAW." The Wage and Hour Division
is proud to partner with the State of
Massachusetts on this important matter. This
sticker is available in both English and
Spanish-English
versions. |
Only
the employer, or the designated representative of
the employer, should affix stickers on equipment.
Employers are urged to place the stickers in
conspicuous spots on the equipment, but to use
care not to cover up other important information –
such as safety instructions, model numbers, or
emergency guidelines – which may be required to be
displayed by other laws or regulations.
These stickers are provided as another
tool to help employers achieve and maintain
compliance with youth employment rules. Employers
are reminded that the use of these stickers does
not relieve them, in any way, from their
obligation to ensure compliance with all youth
employment provisions at all times.
The
following instructions explain how an employer may
print these stickers.
