Category: Chemical Hazards Hazard: Employees were exposed to a 37% formaldehyde solution due to a leaking gasket on the hand pump, which allowed the solution to accumulate on the top of the 55 gallon drum. Employees did not use appropriate personal protective equipment for clean-up and contaminated rags used to clean up the liquid were kept on top of an adjacent drum. Standard Violated: 1910.1048(j)(3), 1910.1048(j)(4) Corrective Action: The employer replaced the gasket and started using a substitute material once the formaldehyde solution onsite had been used up. Description: The photo depicts an accumulation of 37% formaldehyde solution on top of a 55 gallon drum with a failed gasket on the hand pump. The solution was used for porta-john servicing. |
